The Hierarchy of Education
I have been talking about this a lot lately out our live events: that the secret to our success is the huge value that Greg and I place on education. In fact we dedicate 10% of our ongoing income to going to courses, coaching and so on. But not all education is equal in my book. So here is my hierarchy of the most powerful educational opportunities:
- Work with someone who is already successful in their business. Nowhere will you be able to discern the real keys to success better than hands on, at the “coal face” with the person in their own business. I owe so much of my success to exactly this strategy: spending 2 and ½ years working alongside Chris Howard, Karen Corban and all the team of Christopher Howard Training. Learning the ropes, then contributing to their growth allowed me to accelerate my learning massively, and trial new things.
- Business partnerships with other successful business owners. We have a number of strategic partnerships in our business, where we share a part of the bigger pie with other successful business owners in return for their knowledge. The throwaway comments that these guys mention over lunch are often worth millions to us!
- Mentoring from someone successful. Having someone on your side, dedicated to your success is one of the most powerful ways to avoid making costly mistakes. Finding a good mentor is not always easy, and I am always prepared to pay for the right person.
- Workshops or “hands on” training. I love these “intensive style” events. Taking time out of your business to immerse yourself in a new way of thinking is such a critical component of business success. As long as you take away one message that can impact your bottom line- it’s worth it.
- Coaching from a good business coach. I think about mentors and coaches differently. A good coach is not always the best player. They have a different perspective and are there to help implement and keep you accountable to your goals. From an educational perspective they just need to be expert at getting you to implement what you’re learning everywhere else!
- More passive live “seminars” and teleseminars. I still enjoy lapping up information at seminars which are more “teaching” style rather than “active learning”.
- Books and online information. I love reading and am always devouring some new book or other. For those of you who’ve been on calls with me lately you’ll know my most recent loved book was Richard Branson’s “Business Stripped Bare”.
